Project Overview: This project was a Complete Cushion Rebuild on a Schuler AAX5 Transfer Press. The client was very concerned with meeting timing since this press is in full production, the only timing window was Easter weekend. The largest challenge was safely and effectively executing this rebuild in the timing window to allow production to continue to operate.

Equipment Used: This was not a project that required large specialty industrial equipment. All components had to be removed with Hydraulic Wrenches, hand tools, and lowered and raised with 10-ton and 5-ton chain falls.

Challenges: The main challenges were timing and coordination with Pipefitters. LMM and Conti only had 5 days to complete the work and in order to be successful it was very important to communicate each other’s work as to not waste time or be waiting on one another. 

Our Solution: We succeeded one this project due to 3 main reasons.

1) The job was very well planned out prior to mobilizing with GM, LMM, and Conti.

2) LMM sent the proper supervisors, tools and equipment, to ensure we had the knowledge and the resources onsite to complete project successfully.

3) LMM chose a qualified pipefitting contractor the has the expertise and the experience on this particular project.

Results & Outcomes: The result of this project was quite impressive. LMM completed install safely with no incidents, ahead of schedule to allow more time for GM to commission and comfortably turn over to production, and with a high quality of workmanship.

Project Overview: LMM was contracted to offload and stage nine shipping containers of ancillary equipment and major press components for a large industrial press installation. Key components included the crown, slide, bed, bed sides, moving bolsters, tie rods, and eccentric gears.

The crown, slide, and bed were initially offloaded outdoors using our 600-ton gantry system before being transported inside the facility with our Goldhofer heavy transport system for staging.

After staging, our team returned to mobilize the components from the laydown area at one end of the plant to the final press installation area at the opposite end. Once positioned, we rough stacked the primary press components using the 600-ton gantry in preparation for final assembly.

Major Components & Weights:

• Crown (fully loaded): 680,000 lbs
• Bed: 374,000 lbs
• Slide: 342,000 lbs
• Bed Sides (2): 110,000 lbs each
• Moving Bolsters (2): 100,000 lbs each
• Eccentric Gears (2): 83,000 lbs each
• Tie Rods (4): 80,000 lbs total

• 600-Ton Gantry System
• Goldhofer Heavy Transport Platform
• 100,000 lb Taylor Forklift
• 75-Ton Mobile Lift System

Challenges:

This project required precise execution in an active manufacturing environment. Our team worked in close proximity to running press lines while coordinating with multiple trades in a congested workspace.

Additional challenges included:

• Extremely low ceiling heights while stacking large press components
• Tight aisleways and limited turning radius between the laydown and installation areas
• An undersized overhead crane in the press bay, requiring all major lifts to be performed with the 600-ton gantry and 75-ton mobile lift
• Height constraints that required the crown to be under-slung during lifting
• Oversized and high-capacity components requiring engineered lift planning

Our Solution:

Success on this project was driven by detailed pre-planning and coordination at every level:

• Close scheduling coordination with the trucking company to meet delivery timelines
• Ongoing communication with plant leadership to avoid production disruptions
• Collaboration with other trades working in the area
• Extensive pre-measurement and lift planning to ensure ceiling clearance and correct rigging selection
• Coordination with onsite technicians to ensure proper staging and stack configuration

By measuring and engineering each lift in advance, we minimized re-handling of components and ensured correct rigging was utilized the first time.

Results & Outcomes:

• All components safely offloaded, transported, and rough stacked according to engineered lift plans
• Zero safety issues throughout the duration of the project
• No production interruptions while working alongside active press lines
• Minimal re-handling of heavy components due to detailed pre-measurement and correct rigging selection the first time
• Successful execution despite low ceiling heights, tight aisleways, and limited crane capacity
• Seamless coordination with trucking, plant personnel, and other trades

Through proactive planning and precise execution, LMM delivered a complex heavy press staging project on schedule and without disruption to plant operations. The ability to handle components weighing up to 680,000 pounds inside an active facility demonstrates our expertise in engineered heavy lifting, specialty transport, and confined-space press installations.

This project reinforces LMM’s commitment to safety, communication, and operational efficiency even under the most demanding site constraints.

• Turnkey installation of a 30,000 SF automated decorative wheel trim paint finishing system, including air handlers, filtration equipment, clean rooms, spray booths, washers, ovens, a regenerative thermal oxidizer, and sludge processing systems. The project required coordination across multiple trades, including rigging, electrical, HVAC, civil, and pipefitting.
• Working closely with the owner and several different equipment vendors, LMM developed a customized project schedule and leveraged its in-house project management team to streamline communication, keep the project on track, and ensure seamless coordination across all trades.

• Decommissioning and replacement of an outdated moving ground plane dynamometer system within an aeroacoustic wind tunnel. The project included the safe removal of the existing system and the installation of a new, advanced dynamometer. To support the upgraded equipment, several modifications and enhancements were made to the facility and its utility infrastructure.
• The project presented several challenges, including floor load limitations, restricted access through small doorways, and a tight project timeline. LMM overcame these obstacles by designing, engineering, and installing a custom temporary freestanding overhead crane system to facilitate equipment removal and installation within the wind tunnel. To address floor load constraints, a shoring and ground plate system was engineered and installed to safely distribute weight during equipment transport through the facility.
• Through close coordination with the owner, OEM, and multiple trades, LMM’s in-house project management team successfully led this complex project from planning through execution.
